In early spring, beautiful clouds line the bright blue sky over campus. Surrounded by the Flatirons, these campus buildings embody a romantic Italianate style with red tile roofing, a style popular in the Mediterranean. Sandstone for the building walls is gathered locally from Front Range quarries.

From miles away at an overlook in Longmont, CU Boulder’s signature red clay tile roofs — which cover at least half of CU’s 3 million square feet of rooftop — are prominent against the mountainous landscape. Behind campus, the sun shines on the front range of the Rocky Mountains. With views like this, it's no wonder National Geographic named Boulder the .

Every Boulderite knows the beauty of sunset over the Flatirons. As Boulder’s beloved icon, the mountains are inspiration for all types of art, music and even tattoos.

The illustration above, created by illustrator and graphic designer Charlie Hoesly (Anth’17), was a private commission for a fellow alum who wanted a piece that featured the Flatirons. Hoesly creates art pieces that he says are interpretations of things he is passionate about — “like animals, nature and Boulder (Sko Buffs).” He tries to create “intricate illustrations using simple layered shapes,” which is a process he notes he honed in the printmaking department at CU.

The sun peeks through the trees outside the front entrance of Macky Auditorium Concert Hall.

Construction for Macky Auditorium Concert Hall began on Sept. 20, 1909. After 13 years of work, often halted due to legal delays, the building was completed in 1922. Since then, performers of all types have graced the stage, whether they sang operas or played cellos. Macky has also hosted early commencement ceremonies, administrative offices, riots in the 1960s and famous lecturers.

Legend has it Boulder pioneer and gold rush settler Andrew J. Macky, for whom the building is named, decided to donate the funds for the project after being placed at the head of the football team’s parade onto the field at the outset of the 1905 Colorado-Nebraska game in Lincoln. It is believed he was so impressed by the team’s spirit, he was inspired to donate to the university.

Today, the building continues to stand as a CU landmark and provides space for various cultural and artistic events.

CU Boulder professor Dimitri Nakassis teaches a socially distanced class in the Hale Science Building.

This semester, many CU students attended on-campus classes. 鶹Ժ who elected to learn in person could choose between in-person or hybrid classes. This week, students are nearing the ends of their syllabi and gearing up for finals as the last day of classes approaches on April 29.

As summer heats up, some students may choose to take some of the many CU classes offered, like Maritime People: Fishers and Seafarers or The Search for Life in the Universe. Other students may opt to take it slow, relax and maybe even cool off at the Buff Pool, which is set to reopen this spring.

Know any budding CU entrepreneurs who need only a good push to get their business off the ground? Point them to the New Venture Challenge (NVC).

You can think of the program as CU’s entrepreneurial “flight simulator.” Participants from majors across the university, in various levels of study, are invited to pitch their ideas for a chance to gain mentorship and financial support. Ideas are judged on three criteria: promising idea and feasibility, momentum (how much has been accomplished to date) and quality of presentation.

The NVC website states, “NVC is designed to help CU Boulder innovators, changemakers, ideators and entrepreneurs turn their ideas into a reality, even if they're not sure where to begin.”

The 2021 New Venture Challenge Championships took place on April 13. This year’s first place team was HUG solutions, who invented a device that helps deliver COVID-19 vaccinations to rural areas.

Professional climber and development coach Nina Williams (Comm’21) rehearses on the TEDxCU mainstage. She will be presenting on April 11.

Each year, a student-centered team partners with the College of Media, Communication and Information and the Department of Communication to organize an independent TED event, where CU faculty, students and staff present alongside entrepreneurs, local characters and others from outside the CU system. This year, the event is named “Bounce” and will be held virtually. The speakers will consider how humans rebound, ricochet and react.

“In life, we bounce back from hard times and into good ones. We bounce to and from new experiences and remember the old. We use the bounces of our life to tell our stories,” states the TEDxCU website.

This year’s conference, featuring nine speakers, will be held on April 11.
