Vice president of Southwest Research Institute Alan Stern (PhDAstro’89) is leading a program at the institute to enable researchers to fly in space on Virgin Galactic and XCOR Aerospace suborbital rockets in 2013 or 2014. He writes he will be among the flyers and will make at least four trips to space. He has been at the institute since 1991 and lives in Longmont, Colo.

The Virginia Tech Board of Visitors named David Tegarden (Bus’91) the Darrel D. and Betty R. Martin Junior Faculty Fellow of Accounting and Information Systems. He received the three-year fellowship for his teaching and scholarly excellence. David is associate professor of accounting and information systems in Virginia Tech’s business college and has worked there since 1994. He lives in Blacksburg, Va.

As a major in the Army Reserve George Brauchler Jr. (Econ, PolSci’92, Law’95) was originally commissioned after finishing CU’s ROTC program. He writes he is helping wrap up the war in Iraq and was deployed as the chief of military justice for U.S. Division-North, which covers 84,000 square miles of Iraq. He lives in Littleton, Colo., with his wife and four children.

Former Air Force captain, CU regent and judge advocate Kyle Hybl (Indiv’93, Law’96) was elected to the El Pomar Foundation’s Board of Trustees. The foundation contributes about $20 million annually to Colorado nonprofit organizations. He serves as a senior vice president and as general counsel. In addition, he serves as general counsel for The Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, represents the 5th Congressional District as a regent, serves as chairman of the Police Foundation of Colorado Springs and is legal adviser to the National Homeland Defense Foundation in Colorado Springs.

After serving as a Peace Corps volunteer, Laura DeLuca (MAnth’96, PhD’02) has focused on Africa. As a CU anthropology lecturer, she teaches several Africa-related classes and has published many articles on African issues, including the crisis in Darfur, education in Kenya and refugees. She has conducted conservation-related research in Kenya and Tanzania and is co-editing a book emphasizing peace building by communities in Africa.

Associate professor of political science at Rutgers University, Newark, Mara Sidney (MPolSci’96, PhD’00) received a Fulbright Visiting Research Chair Award to conduct research in Canada. Since January she has been comparing the United States’ and Canada’s national and local immigration policies, linking them to the work of nongovernmental organizations. She also is examining how immigrants’ interactions with nongovernmental organizations affect their process of making a home in a new country. Her project is called “Making a Home, Feeling at Home: The Role of NGOs in Immigrant Integration.” She lives in New York, N.Y.

Doing her part to conserve the environment, Sarah Kauss (Acct’97) developed her own water bottle company called S’well. The insulated bottles are designed to be both stylish and practical and are toxin-free. Sarah’s intention with the company is to reduce the number of single-use plastic bottles. Her S’well bottles were listed in O: The Oprah Magazine as a must-have item, and Sarah was featured in Portfolio, CU’s Leeds School of Business magazine. She lives in New York, N.Y.

Uruguay resident Lucy Peglar’s (Anth’98) was surprised to hear her purse was featured in a Dec. 8 Denver Postarticle about hip purses that are pushing the envelope in handbag fashion. Lucy and her husband own Cocobelle Designs, a purse, sandal and jewelry business. They live on the coast of Uruguay with their three daughters. While Lucy loves beach life, she says she misses Boulder and the Flatirons. She is the sister of Tori Peglar (MJour’00), the editor of the Coloradan.

Freelance photographer Krisanne Johnson (Jour’00) received a $30,000 Eugene Smith Grant in the category of humanistic photography for her project called “I Love You Real Fast.” Since 2006 she has been documenting the coming of age of females in Swaziland where one in two women are infected with HIV/AIDS. When not traveling to Africa, she lives in New York City.
