ProPublica’s 10-part series “The NYPD Files” is a searing investigation into how the country’s largest police department maintains impunity from public oversight and the toll that impunity takes on the city’s civilians––especially those who are marginalized and most at risk. The series is the winner of this year’s Al Nakkula Award for police reporting, co-sponsored by The Denver Press Club and CMCI.

It’s inevitable that at some point we must all “get our affairs in order,” and when we do, there are checklists, policies and professionals to help create everything from wills and trusts to advance directives. But a key element––guidance surrounding technology and end-of-life planning––is missing. Assistant Professor Jed Brubaker will work to close this gap through a five-year research project supported by a prestigious NSF CAREER grant.

The Communication assistant professor was one of four winners. The award recognizes significant achievements of university community members in developing a culturally and intellectually diverse university community, reflective of inclusive excellence. Awardees, each of whom received $2,000, engage in meaningful diversity activities beyond their primary CU responsibilities.

In the public relations world, the Bateman Case Study Competition is legendary. Renowned since its inception in the 70s, the year-long project tests students’ abilities to plan, produce and execute a full-scale public relations campaign. This academic year marks CU Boulder’s first foray into the competition––an accomplishment that happens to coincide with the program being named an A-list school by PR News. CU’s contenders are competing against 370 PRSSA affiliated chapters, all respected public relations departments across the country. 

The strategic communication student consistently demonstrates honor, integrity and accountability. She will be recognized on Feb. 23, 2021, during the marquee event of the Leo Hill Speaker Series.
