Jessie J. Smith (Jess)Ìýis a PhD candidate and a Google PhD Fellow at The University of Colorado Boulder researching machine learning and AI ethics with an emphasis on algorithmic fairness and harm mitigation. She has conducted responsible AI research in industry through internships with Adobe’s harm and bias evaluation team, Spotify's Algorithmic Impact Team, Apple's Machine Learning Robustness Team, Microsoft's FATE (Fairness, Accountability, Transparency, and Ethics in AI) Team, and the Allen AI Institute's Ethics & Society Team. Jess' dissertation focuses on operationalizing fairness within machine learning systems, with a focus on the application of recommender systems---which includes developing best practices to empirically measure the inherently unobservable and contested construct of fairness. In addition, she co-founded and co-hosted the Radical AI Podcast, an AI ethics podcast, which reached listeners from countries all around the world.
