These challenges are further compounded by the ongoing impact of local and international events, such as election cycles, global conflicts, lingering COVID-19 induced changes in learning environments, and stresses related to climate change. In the face of these challenges, it is more important than ever to prioritize student engagement and well-being to help them thrive.

Engaged and well-supported students are more likely to succeed academically, socially, emotionally, and contribute positively to their communities. As an instructor, focusing on building strong relationships with students and cultivating inclusion and community in the classroom are key to helping students persevere through intellectual and psychological challenges they may face inside and outside the classroom (). Consider reviewing the linked resources or participating in CTL micro-credentials and communities of practice to further explore these themes.听

Elections offer an opportunity for students to be engaged and thoughtful citizens in a vibrant democracy. However, they can also be a source of intense emotions that percolate to the classroom. Differing opinions can often be perceived as challenges to individual lived experiences, belief systems, and hopes for the future. This is further compounded by rampant misinformation that can break down the potential for civil dialogue. As the 2024 election cycle draws to a close, the potential for polarization, anxiety and uncertainty among our students is elevated. Keeping this in mind, we share several resources regarding how to maintain student well-being during and after elections. 听

Center for Humanities & Arts partners with Colorado Chautauqua to present the Difficult Dialogues series!

The difficult dialogue event series hosted by the Center for Humanities & Arts (CHA) at CU Boulder continues to be a critical space to unpack and make sense of the world through informed discussions on potentially charged and sensitive topics, such as election year polarization, the evolution of democracy, conflict in the Middle East, or race relations. Conceived in 2019 by CHA and hosted semi-annually in collaboration with units within and outside CU, this year CHA has partnered with and their Voices of Chautauqua series to host difficult dialogues as a monthly series. On Nov 13, 2024, they will host yet another enlightening discussion titled: 鈥淚s that a fact!? Finding facts in a world filled with disinformation.鈥� and support CHA in continuing to host this important forum.

颁罢尝鈥檚 Book Club, run every semester by Professional Development Lead, Dr. Preston Cumming, brought together graduate students, faculty, postdocs, and staff from universities across the U.S. in Fall 2024 to discuss , a West Virginia University Press book authored by Robert Eaton, Steven V. Hunsaker and Bonnie Moon. When asked for their review, , a long-time participant of the book club, says they found the practices mentioned in this book to be one of the most applicable for their graduate discipline of composition & music technology at Northwestern University. While the book focuses on supporting students primarily experiencing anxiety and depression, Jaz found that the recommended teaching practices are applicable in supporting students experiencing a broad range of mental illnesses. They highlighted that the book reminds us of how integral relationship-building is to student success in higher education.

• Join the CTL for our new Student Educational Scholarship Series, celebrating CU graduate student education-based research. We will meet remotely on Wednesdays, 10:00-11:00 am MT (Oct. 30-Nov. 20). In each session, we will briefly discuss a research article associated with the student鈥檚 work, followed by an in-depth discussion of their dissertation or thesis research.听
• The monthly will take place on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 from 12:30-1:30pm on Zoom. November鈥檚 session will focus on 鈥淏uilding Trust and Centering Student Learning in the Age of Generative AI鈥�, presented by ASSETT鈥檚 Graduate Assistant Rebecca Lee (Ph.D. Candidate in Linguistics). Leave this session with tips for dialoguing openly with students about generative AI, ethics, and classroom policy 鈥� no matter what policy you鈥檇 like to pursue.
• The Boulder Faculty Assembly and CTL have launched an AI working group that meets every alternate Friday on Zoom from 12-1 pm throughout the remainder of the Fall semester. The current focus of the group is to generate - sample syllabus statements for AI use in the classroom, and guidance on recommending and enforcing use guidelines with students. .听
• Now accepting applications for the Spring 2025 cohort of the Just & Equitable Teaching micro-credential. The Just & Equitable Teaching (JET) Program brings together educators from the CU Boulder community to provide professional development in social justice and equity in the classroom. All CU Boulder instructors, graduate students and instructional support staff are welcome to apply.听
• There鈥檚 a new Canvas course template! Launched on Oct. 15, the template was designed by faculty from across campus to reduce course preparation time for educators, while contributing to a more consistent and positive Canvas experience for our students. If you are interested in trying out the template in your Spring 2025 courses, please let us know by emailing us at CTL@colorado.edu! We would love to get your feedback and support you as you explore this template.
