NSI Newsletter - Spring 2023 Edition
From the Director, Dr. Iain Boyd:
The importance of national security for ensuring our values and way of life has been illustrated in the past twelve months by incidents such as the Russian invasion of the Ukraine and the Chinese spy balloon. The perceived need to bolster U.S. defenses has resulted in the largest ever budget for the Pentagon of $817B in 2023. While most of those funds will be spent on the acquisition of existing capabilities such as missiles, aircraft, and ships, as well as supporting personnel, some of the budget increase is supporting new technology development. This situation represents an important opportunity for NSI to expand and fulfill its mission of conducting cutting edge applied research in support of national security missions. Even though some priorities may change under the new Republican-led House, the geo-political landscape is unlikely to change any time soon, requiring the U.S. to continue its investment in advanced capabilities as potential adversaries continue to evolve their approaches.
NSI is continuing to enhance its impact through the development of effective collaborations with industry partners and government customers in key national security areas such as hypersonics, radio communications, micro-electronics, and space domain awareness. Through these efforts, we are helping to create new capabilities and training the workforce in some of the most critical areas for the security and economic prosperity of our state and country.
