We are committed to communication praxis. As the hosts of this year’s Public Address Conference (PAC), we will feature two free roundtables for a “preconference” on education: the first will highlight policy and debates about K-12 education and justice; the second will focus on trends, both promising and disconcerting, of rhetorical studies and trends in higher education. Both preconference roundtables are free and open to the public. Join us on the University of Colorado Boulder campus to foster timely discussions from leading scholars.

The Shed: Boulder County Foodshed, a local food advocacy organization, has teamed up with BVSD for this local food inspired art show, featuring high school students' art pieces reflecting on local food issues across our county! Come “dig in” to our local foodshed, listen to local food heroes, build seed bombs, vote for your favorite piece, share local food, and more! You'll also have an opportunity to gather local food resources and learn about The Shed's work to inspire increased production, consumption, and preservation of local foods. The show runs concurrently with the Boulder County Farmers’ Market and is free and open for all ages.

On Friday, Feb. 10, CDE (formerly BoulderTalks) assisted in convening a workshop and creating a teacher packet for high school art teachers in Boulder Valley School District participating in The Shed, Boulder County’s first countywide educational art project supporting local food. The contest, “Dig In! to Local Food” asks high school students to learn about and highlight issues within and beyond our food system to explore the idea that “local food is about more than just miles.”

The contest supports The Shed’s work as a new education campaign formed by a coalition of business, government, education, and non-profit leaders in Boulder County and contributes to the goal of balancing our local food system by encouraging increased production, consumption, and preservation of regional and local food options. Student art will be featured at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMoCA) on Earth Day, April 22, 2017, just outside of the Boulder County Farmers Market. The event is open to the public.

Constance Gordon, CDE research fellow, and Veronica House, CDE Faculty Fellow and Associate Director for Service Learning and Outreach in the Program for Writing and Rhetoric, led the teacher gathering along with invited guests: Brian Coppom, director of the Boulder County Farmers Market, and Mark and Kena Guttridge, founding owners of Ollin Farms in Longmont, CO. During the gathering, catered by local Seeds Cafe at the Boulder County Public Library, teachers had an opportunity to learn from Brian and Mark about the successes and struggles of local farmers in Boulder County, explore ways to utilize art for social change, and discuss the nuances of local food through a food justice lens.

“Food justice requires that we imagine new ecological and social relationships and support communities right to grow, sell, and consume food that is culturally appropriate, affordable, and nutritious,” Constance expressed. “One way we do this is to advocate for food economies that take the well-being of consumers, land, workers, and animals seriously. �鶹��Ժ have an opportunity to explore what this might mean for our own Boulder County foodshed.”

The idea for the contest came out of a research project Veronica House began with her undergraduate students exploring what assumptions consumers often make about local food. The results of their research highlighted that although many people value the idea of local food, consumers have divergent and even misleading understandings of what local food actually is. The goal of the Dig In! art contest is to expand the definition and make the case that, as The Shed explains, “local food is about more than just miles.” �鶹��Ժ have the opportunity to artistically reflect a social and/or environmental food problem, give attention to a food issue, highlight a person or effort that is under covered, celebrate what is working in our local community, or inspire a solution to a problem and energize community involvement. With the help of their art teachers, students can choose different artistic mediums through which to express their findings.

The contest is partially funded by a CU Boulder Public Outreach and Community Engagement Interdisciplinary Group Award to support food literacy. CDE has partnered with The Shed to assist with community engagement around food.

On January 19, 2017, CDE (formerly BoulderTalks) director Phaedra Pezzullo and co-director Leah Sprain of the Department of Communication will give a public lecture on fostering community dialogue from 4 to 5 p.m. Drs. Pezzullo and Sprain will also co-lead the associated workshop for graduate students and postdocs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. This is part of the Engaged Scientist series coordinated by CU's new Albert A. Bartlett Center for Science Communication, CIRES Education and Outreach, and INSTAAR.

Co-Director Sprain is supporting the City of Boulder’s upcoming Neighborhood Summit on October 28, 2016 by designing a deliberative session on neighborhood organizing and city-neighborhood relationships. This session is part of a longer day for community members to come together to discuss ways to strengthen neighborhood engagement by focusing on skill-building related to meaningful civic dialogue.

There will be a number of speakers and exercises designed to help build skills for effective deliberation, dialogue and collective problem-solving. Attendees will be asked to help the city identify next steps for the development of neighborhood services and to make recommendations for how to strengthen the community/civic dialogue and partnership.

Co-director Leah Sprain co-chaired and organized a pre-conference at the International Communication Association's (ICA) annual convention in summer 2016 on the topic Public Deliberation and Dialogue: Building an International Network of Research, Pedagogy, and Service.

The group included faculty and students working in Denmark, Finland, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Norway and the USA. The gathering was designed to build a stronger international network by sharing ideas on public deliberation and dialogue in the areas of teaching, research and service. Read more »

Partnering with the city of Boulder’s Resilient Boulder, Leah Sprain designed and facilitated a community forum on resilient communities held in Feb. 2016.

Along with communities around the world, Boulder faces stresses like climate change, floods, drought, economic disruption and fire that call for working in unprecedented ways -- including innovative and inclusive approaches to recognizing our risks and talking together.

Resilient Boulder (a city effort in conjunction with the Rockefeller Foundation’s 100 Resilient Cities) has identified focus areas for increasing Boulder's ability to respond to potential shocks and stresses while "bouncing forward" in ways that improve our quality of life.

Center for Communication and Democratic Engagement Director and Professor Phaedra C. Pezzullo received a small seed grant from the University of Colorado Boulder Outreach and Community Engagement Interdisciplinary Group Award to help launch a new and hopefully ongoing partnership. CDE (formerly BoulderTalks), the Program in Writing & Rhetoric (PWR) and Environmental Studies at CU-Boulder are working with The Shed this fall 2016 to spring 2017 on an education and engagement campaign in Boulder about local food.

While “local food” is said a lot in Boulder, few people agree on what it means and why it is desirable. We are working on a multimedia food-literacy campaign to help The Shed publicize its mission and work, an outreach program with high school art teachers with the Chef Ann Foundation to help foster community dialogues about what a “food shed” is and more.

An interdisciplinary team from engineering, information science, environmental design, and communication have been studying the potential for positive interdependencies between critical infrastructures--systems and processes of built, information, and governance infrastructure--that advance community resilience.

We've explored this through partnership with the city of Boulder's participation in the 100 Resilient Cities initiative and the development of a serious game on flood hazard and mitigation.

The outputs from the first year of a RIPs Type 1 project funded by the National Science Foundation funded team are available here.
