Nii Armah Sowah is a Ghanaian-born arts educator. He studied at the University of Ghana’s School of Performing Arts and holds a M.A in Expressive Arts Therapies from Lesley University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Nii Armah’s research/teaching interests include African-centered pedagogy, cross cultural education, arts for human development, African cultural philosophy and arts for social change.Â
Nii Armah’s career spans dance, choreography, voice, acting and expressive arts therapy. He is a Teaching Associate Professor at CU Boulder’s Dance Program. Courses include African Dance, Performance and Community Engagement and Introduction to Dance and Culture. He has also conducted residencies and taught master classes across Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, Canada and the US.Â
Nii Armah considers himself a cultural ambassador, with a passion for building/strengthening bonds across African and African diasporic communities. He founded the Boulder-based 1000-Voices project and recently spearheaded the Chocolate Circle, a community-building initiative for black folk living in Boulder County.Â
Nii Armah was the recipient of the 2008 “Excellence in Teaching Award†at CU Boulder, and was named a living “Legend of Dance†in Colorado by the Carson Brierly Giffin Dance Library, University of Denver (2016)
