Alexander the Great is one of the most famous figures from antiquity and his story has been told and retold hundreds of times in the centuries since his death in 323 – but always from the same perspective. The Alexander we encounter is the Alexander of a handful of historians writing at the height of the Roman Empire. So what should we do with Alexander in the 21st Century? In this talk, Harrison proposes a new methodology that allows us to explore different perspectives on Alexander’s reign and consider the ways in which indigenous communities respond to the presence of colonizing powers. Local people did much more than just reacting to Alexander’s arrival and actively sought to gain an advantage from his presence. This had a fundamental impact on his campaign. Thus, Harrison offers the very first attempt to develop a sustained history of Alexander from below.

The Center for Western Civilization, Thought & Policy will host a panel of speakers for an event on Thurs. May 2. The event, "Last Moments: Death and our Animal Companions," will discuss the widespread experience many of us go through in losing a pet. This discussion accompanies the "Last Moments" photo gallery on display at St. Aidan's Episcopal Church. This is our final event of the semester and the last in our Western Civ Dialogue Series. The event is Co-Sponsored by St. Aidan's.

The panel will discuss the somber experience of losing a pet as well as the subsequent issues that pet owners are faced with when confronting the decline of their animals. This panel will delve into many questions that are associated with this decision. What medical actions are the most appropriate and compassionate at the end of an animal's life? What are the moral and spiritual implications that people wrestle with when it comes to making that final decision?

The "Last Moments" photo gallery is a photo essay by CU Professor and photojournalist Ross Taylor. Taylor's essay explores the intimacy of the human-animal bond. Photos show the moments before and after the passing of a pet at home with their owner(s). The "Last Moments" gallery will be on display in the Sibell Woll Gallery from April 28 to June 23 at St. Aidan's Episcopal Church.

Accompanying Taylor in the discussion is Cheryl Abbate, Fr. Dan Edwards, and Jessica Pierce. Abbate is a Doctoral Candidate at CU Boulder, writing her dissertation on the philosophy of animal rights. Fr. Edwards currently serves at St. Aidan's and received his M. Div and S.T. M. in spiritual direction from the General Theological Seminary. Pierce is a bioethicist and faculty affiliate at the Center for Bioethics and Humanities at the CU Anshutz Medical Campus.

�鶹��Ժ, faculty, and members of the public are encouraged to attend the lecture. The gallery at St. Aidan's will be open from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm on May 2nd, prior to the scheduled panel discussion. The scheduled presentation will take place in Benson Earth Sciences, room 180, beginning at 6:00 pm. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A session and a small reception. A closing reception following the panel discussion will take place from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm at St. Aidan's. CMEMS presents "Reflections on the "Energetic" Christ in medieval theology, ritual and art" with Eric Palazzo for Tuesday, April 30th, 2019 at 5:30 PM in Hale Science 230.

Eric Palazzo is professor of Medieval Art History at the University of Poitiers, senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France, former director of the Centre d'études supérieures de civilisation médiévale, former dean of the faculty of Humanities in Poitiers. His research has been supported by numerous institutions including the Ecole Française de Rome, the Max-Planck-Institut für Geschichte, the Getty Research Institute and now the Institute for Advanced Study where he is Elinor Lunder Founders' Circle Member at the School of Historical studies.He is the author of numerous articles and monographs, including most recently L'invention chrétienne des cinq sens dans la liturgie et l'art au Moyen Age (Paris, 2014) and Peindre c'est prier. Anthropologie de la prière chrétienne (Paris, 2016), on art and liturgy in the Middle Ages.

A new sixties experience! The music of Galt MacDermot, composer of HAIR and beyond!

Let the Sunshine In is a celebration of the vast musical contributions of Galt MacDermot. Originally created by Eric Svejcar (New York-based Music Director and Composer) and Tamara Meneghini under the support and guidance of MacDermot himself, Svejcar and Meneghini weave together a journey of Galt MacDermot’s unique place in music history. In the words of MacDermot: “Eric and Tammy perform with the vigor and enthusiasm that music from the sixties need but with an expertise and insight that is unique and gives the songs new life.”

Best known for composing the rock musical, HAIR, Galt MacDermot’s career spanned more than 50 years, beginning with a Grammy award in 1960 for his song, “African Waltz”. He moved to New York in 1964, beginning his legendary Broadway career with HAIR. He wrote numerous other musicals including Isabel’s a Jezebel, Two Gentlemen of Verona (Tony Award and Drama Desk Award), Dude, Via Galactica and The Human Comedy, to name a few. He contributed to numerous film scores and also performed regularly with the band he formed, New Pulse

Jazz Band, which performed and recorded his original music. With MacDermot’s passing in December 2018, Svejcar and Meneghini have revived a tribute to the master composer and celebration of songs that embody the joy, energy and “funk” that is truly his style.

The Center for Western Civilization, Thought & Policy will host professor Mark Lilla for an event on Thurs. April 11, 2019. Lilla's lecture, "Identity and Citizenship," will discuss how a clash in identity politics have affected national discourse. This event is being presented by the CWCTP's Visiting Scholar in Conservative Thought & Policy.

Lilla's lecture will cover the clash of identity politics between the left and right in the US. He will discuss how this clash has contributed to the degradation of our national discourse. His lecture will question if a renewed focus on our shared citizenship can move us beyond such disagreements.

Mark Lilla is a professor of humanities at Columbia University. Lilla specializes in intellectual history and his research focuses on Western political and religious thought. Lilla has authored many books relating to political identity and political theory. Lilla has also received prestigious fellowships with the Institut d'Études Avancées and the Guggenheim.

The Center for Western Civilization, Thought & Policy will host speakers Larry Temkin and Jason Brennan for an event on Tues. April 9. Brennan and Temkin's lecture, "Capitalism: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly," will discuss capitalism the benefits and flaws of capitalism as it operates in the real world. This event is part of the Western Civ Dialogue Series and is Co-Sponsored by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute and the ISI Inkling Society at CU Boulder.

Brennan and Temkin's event will discuss how markets have liberated individuals from poverty, but are also rigged in unfair ways. The speakers will try to combat this challenge and offer solutions, if there are any, to the problems facing the free enterprise system. The event promises to be illuminating, but devoid of bitterness that permeates provocative societal discourse.

Jason Brennan is a libertarian philosopher and the Robert J. and Elizabeth Flanagan Family Professor of Strategy, Economics, Ethics, and Public Policy at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University. Brennan has authored ten books and has five more under contract relating to politics and political economy. Brennan also has published works in Ethics, Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, Australasian Journal of Philosophy, Philosophical Quarterly, Social Philosophy and Policy, etc.

Larry Temkin is an egalitarian philosopher and a distinguished professor of philosophy at Rutgers University. Temkin specializes in normative ethics, social and political philosophy, and applied ethics. He has authored two books Rethinking the Good: Moral Ideals and the Nature of Practical Reasoning (OUP, 2012) and Inequality (OUP, 1993). Temkin has also received fellowships from the Danforth Foundation, the National Humanities Center, Harvard’s Safra Center for Ethics, All Souls College Oxford, the National Institutes of Health, the Australian National University, and Princeton

The Center for Western Civilization, Thought & Policy will host law professor Laura Weinrib for an event on Wed. March 20. Weinrib's lecture "The First Weaponization of the First Amendment," will discuss how the first amendment first became "weaponized" in the 1930s and how that has affected constitutional rights today. She is speaking as part of the Western Civ Dialogue Series.

Weinrib's lecture will explain how in the 30s, radical labor activists first weaponized the first amendment. She argues that the unusual coalition between the activists and business leaders helped to make judicial enforcement of free speech a central feature of American constitutional democracy. Weinrib will explain how this forgotten bargain backfired and how it has implicated the contest over constitutional rights in the present day.

Weinrib is a professor of law at the University of Chicago Law School and is also an associate member of the department of history at the school. She is a legal historian, whose work focuses on the intersection of constitutional law and labor law. Weinrib's research also includes American legal history, labor law, and civil liberties. Weinrib is also the author of The Taming of Free Speech: America’s Civil Liberties Compromise.

CMEMS presents a James Field Willard Lecture in Medieval History, "Gilds and Things: the Making of Medieval London" with Rory Naismith for Monday, March 18th, 2019 at 5:00 PM in UMC 247.

Medieval London had a unique and complex system of government. This lecture explores the early history of two of the key elements of its infrastructure: the Court of Husting and the Folkmoot. It is argued that these bodies emerged out of a 'peace gild' that recorded its statutes in the time of King Æthelstan (924-39). Tracing the history of these entities highlights a key phase in the transformation and formalisation of London's government over the tenth and eleventh centuries, as its status grew relative both to the surrounding area and to England as a whole.

Featuring:
Rory Naismith is the author of Money and Power in Anglo-Saxon England: the Southern English Kingdoms 757–865 (2012), which was awarded the International Society of Anglo-Saxonists Best First Book prize in 2013. His principal current research interest is the role of money (coined and otherwise) in early medieval Britain, particularly Anglo-Saxon England. Money has obvious economic implications, it is also important as a source of early medieval cultural, institutional and political history, and Naismith’s research brings together these diverse approaches to how money worked in society, including extensive work with material culture as well as texts.
