Accepting applications for The Korea Society’s Spring 2025 Undergraduate Study Abroad Travel Grant from November 1st through November 30th.

Given the Society’s commitment to promoting a greater awareness, understanding and cooperation between the people of the U.S. and Korea, this travel grant, initiated in fall 2023, has been created to ensure a wide-range of undergraduate students have the opportunity to study and live in Korea. However, for some the high cost of travel to and from Korea can present a burden and personal funding for travel within the country can be nonexistent. Therefore this travel ‘topping off’ grant has been developed to defray travel expenses for students who would normally struggle financially to realize the life-changing experience of studying abroad, the soft-skill development which future employers find so attractive, and, most importantly, the chance to cultivate an in-person understanding of Korea, a country of strategic importance to the U.S.

Eligibility Requirements

* Enrolled as an undergraduate student in an accredited U.S. college or university.

* Be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident.

* Demonstrate a strong interest in Korea.

* Demonstrate financial need and a compelling explanation of how the travel grant award is important to them personally.

* Intend to enroll (or be enrolled) in a full academic term in spring 2025 or a full academic year studying abroad in Korea

Benefits

* Travel grant of up to $2,000 USD awarded directly to the student.

* Upon returning to the U.S., an opportunity to participate in a panel discussion offered by the Society with other grantees to share insights on the value of studying abroad in the Republic of Korea.

The China-America Student Conference (ChASC) is a student-led exchange program, initiated in 1934 by university students concerned by the breakdown of bilateral relations prior to the Second World War. Today, an equal number of students from the U.S. and China are competitively selected each year to spend two weeks over the summer together, studying and analyzing China-U.S. relations while visiting three to four diverse regions in the host country. This year we will be holding our inaugural visit to China making ChASC history!

Applications Are Open for the 5th China-America Student Conference!

The 5th China-America Student Conference (ChASC5) encourages participants to embark on a path of collaboration and cultural appreciation. Delegates will delve into invigorating programs, engage in meaningful dialogue, and participate in enriching cultural exchanges, all while gaining a profound appreciation for both commonalities and differences on a global scale. By fostering an environment of collaboration and respect, we aim to build a foundation for strong partnerships and lasting collaboration, navigating the complexities of U.S-China relations with insight and empathy.

The 5th JASC will travel to Beijing, Xi’an/Suzhou, and Shanghai from July 5th* to July 20th, 2025. Applications will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. EST on December 29, 2024.

*American delegates will potentially attend a mandatory 1-day orientation TBA inside the United States before the start of the main conference in China.

Eligibility

All students studying in the United States or China are eligible to apply for the 5th ChASC. If you are graduating before the summer within two years (2023) or recently entered college, you are still eligible to apply. Please note which delegation you want to apply for as there are only 10 open spots on each side. Applicants interested in becoming a member of the American Delegation for the in-person conference must have a valid U.S passport and will need to apply for and acquire a Chinese visa prior to the start of the program. (ChASC Executive Committee will assist in providing letters).

ChASC welcomes applications from students of all academic majors to foster a deeper, interdisciplinary exchange. As the official language of the conference is English, no prior experience in Mandarin or Asian studies is required. Those interested in serving as a member of the Chinese delegation should be comfortable actively contributing to scholarly discussions conducted entirely in English.

ChASC is unique in that it is entirely student-run and student-led in nature. The 5 Executive Committee Members, elected by their peers at the end of the 4th ChASC, determine the conference theme, roundtable topics, programming, and oversee the day-to-day logistics of conference planning and execution.

This aspect of ChASC allows delegates to delve into topics that are of interest to them and empowers them to discuss pressing issues. This helps them recognize issues they may one day be tasked with as the next generation of U.S.-Asia leaders.

Delegates will not only develop strong cross-cultural communication skills through their interactions with their peers, but will also have numerous opportunities to network with leading officials, academics, and distinguished professionals in the public and private sectors, as well as prominent business leaders and key figures in the field of U.S.-China relations.

By balancing opportunities for personal, intellectual, and professional growth, ChASC encourages delegates to realize their keen ability to spark meaningful change on the world stage and within their local communities alike.

Academic Interchange

An indispensable component of all ChASC gatherings are the Roundtables, or RTs for short. During the Conference, delegates conduct original, personal research alongside their academic cohorts. Each RT is made up of an equal number of Chinese and American delegates to ensure a balanced exchange of cultural perspectives. Through these intensive discussions on meaningful subjects, participants gain a more nuanced understanding of their international counterparts and actively develop real world solutions in the context of the U.S.-China relationship.

I'm writing from the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) to send a friendly notice that might be of interest to your communities about the 2025 ALTA Emerging Translator Mentorship Program, which is open for applications until November 30 (that's 1 month from today)! If you would be willing to share this announcement with your communities, we would be most grateful.

The ALTA Emerging Translator Mentorship Program is designed to establish and facilitate a close working relationship between an experienced translator and an emerging translator on a project selected by the emerging translator. The mentorship duration is one year. The emerging translator is expected to choose a project that can be completed in that time, and they will only be advised on that particular project. The program is offered at no cost to the emerging translator, and applicants needn't be based in the US to apply for the program.

As the Nov. 8^th deadline to apply for our Learning, Inclusion, Networking & Community (LINC) program draws near, we're reaching out to adjacent CU programs, including CAS as part of our final push for applications.

Serving as the bridge program into MASP for current A&S students at CU, LINC is a weekend retreat (1/10-1/12) designed to create an inclusive academic community of scholars and friends consisting of a diverse group of students from all different backgrounds and A&S majors.

Accepted students receive a $250 stipend for completing the program and become eligible for a MASP participation scholarship ($1,000/semester), as a part of our community.

The Carolina Asia Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a candidate for a one-year (renewable for a second year) postdoctoral scholar whose work addresses Southeast Asia and its transnational connections, preferably but not necessarily the Southeast Asian diaspora in the US Southeast. The successful candidate’s research should adapt traditional area studies to contemporary realities by situating the world region amidst overseas linkages broadly defined, from human migration and community networks to energy, trade, language, ecology, art, and/or other connective processes. Organized by UNC’s Bringing Southeast Asia Home initiative and funded by the Henry Luce Foundation’s program on Southeast Asia, this position will be located in the department that most closely aligns with the successful candidate’s academic discipline, pending approval from that department. We invite applications from scholars based in arts and humanities, as well as social and natural sciences, so long as their scholarship addresses the theme. In addition to advancing their own research project, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in the intellectual community of Southeast Asian Studies at UNC, including presenting their work at an annual UNC Southeast Asia workshop, and, dependent on approval from the scholar’s department and dean, teach one course per academic year related to the theme of the position.

Mentorship Program

The American Institute of Indian Studies has initiated a mentoring opportunity for AIIS Junior Fellowship applicants who do not have advisors at their universities with South Asia expertise.

If an applicant would like to use the mentoring opportunity for someone to read and comment on their proposal, they should send the proposal draft to the U.S. Director (aiis@uchicago.edu), with verification that applicant does not have advisor at their university with South Asia expertise. U.S. Director will pair mentors and mentees as closely as possible by field and area of interest.

Mentors have agreed to read two drafts, a preliminary one and a revised one based on mentor’s comments. The first draft submitted should not be an outline or notes. Mentees should review the helpful hints for proposals before submitting their first draft. Mentees are urged to honor this guideline and not ask for comments on further drafts.

In order to be guaranteed acceptance into this mentoring program, please submit request no later than twelve days before the fellowship competition application deadline.
