Event Funding
CAS Event Funding Procedures
CAS has revised event application procedures and forms. Please read through the following information carefully.
Faculty are eligible for one award per academic year. CAS is happy to consider applications for AY 24-25 and beyond. We are especially interested in events which will align with our annual theme.
CAS is implementing a two-tiered funding system, please apply with the application that best suits your needs.
Tier 1 – From $500 to $3000 per award is available for Asia-related events. Cost-sharing with other programs is strongly encouraged.
CAS will approve up to three Tier 1 applications per semester, for a total of up to six per academic year. Applications are due November 1 (for the following Spring semester events) and April 1 (for the following Fall semester events).
Tier 1 events will be fully supported by CAS. This means we will handle all event and travel arrangements, help design a poster and process all payments needed for the success of your event. Faculty members who need such support should submit a Tier 1 application even if necessary financial support is minimal.
Priority will be given to events which relate to our annual theme.
If you have an idea you would like to develop, but your proposal is in early stages, please feel free to contact Liza.Williams@colorado.edu with any questions about this application process (as early as possible before the relevant deadline).
Due to limited funding, we are unable to fund any undergraduate student-related events such as speech contests.
Download the Tier 1 application here. Applications must be submitted by a faculty member.
Tier 2 – Up to $500 per award is available for Asia-related events. Cost-sharing with other programs is strongly encouraged.
CAS will approve up to four Tier 2 applications per semester during the academic year for a maximum of $4000 in awards. Once the funding is spent for the year, no further applications will be considered.
Tier 2 events are intended for faculty members who are looking for financial support for their events, but all details and arrangements will be made by their home department. If the home department cannot provide this administrative support, faculty applicants should identify another co-sponsor who can, or apply for CAS Tier 1 funding, which includes event planning services.
If approved, CAS will transfer the award to the appropriate fund 34 speedtype.
Tier 2 Applications are due by 12:00pm on the first Friday of each month (September, October, November, December, February, March, April, May). Applications received after this deadline will be considered in the following month's committee meeting.
Download the Tier 2 application here. Applications must be submitted by a faculty member. Tier 2 applications must arrive at least 4 weeks prior the date of the event so that we can give them full consideration and transfer funds.
Please contact Liza Williams (liza.williams@colorado.edu) if you have any questions.

International Travel:
All international travel paid for by a Department of Education grant (our primary source of event funding) must be approved by the Department of Education in advance of ticket purchase. This requires several weeks of lead time, so apply early!
Food:
Our primary source of event funding cannot pay for food or be transferred. If your event is to include food or catering, please consider an additional source of funding for that part of the event.
Publicizing non-CAS events:
Information about "non-CAS events" (events not sponsored by CAS) may now be included in our monthly event digest and posted on our website's bulletin board. The CAS monthly digest is sent out at the beginning of each month to those on our listserve and provides detailed information about CAS sponsored events for the following weeks. The addition of non-CAS events to our event digest is designed to help our faculty promote Asia-related events that may be of interest to those subscribing to our email list.
If you would like CAS to include a NON-CAS sponsored event on our website and in our event digest, please send information (date, time, location, contact for questions and a short description) about the event by the 25th of each month for the following month's digest to Liza Williams at Liza.Williams@colorado.edu. For example, information about an event received before March 25 will be included in April's digest, which will be sent out in early April. We appreciate the information as far in advance as possible.
