The Boulder startup community continues to grow as newly-founded startup,ÌýSpecdrums is acquired by the Boulder-based technology company, Sphero. This past spring, CU students presented their idea for Specdrums and won the 2018 New Venture Challenge after placing second the previous year. Specdrums developed software that uses rings worn on the user’s finger to turn color into sounds simply by tapping. With a focus on music education, Specdrum hopesÌýto grow their product further after aÌýsuccessful $200k Kickstarter campaign.
Specdrums was created as a cross-discipline company with CU students from Leeds, Engineering and the School of MusicÌýcollaborating to develop educational software that combines music, technology, and business. With founder Steven Dourmashkin, Jenna Palensky, Zane Taylor, as well as Leeds 2017 alum and Chief Marketing Officer Jack FitzGerrell behind the successful start-up, getting acquired so soon is a tremendous success. They are excited to transition to Sphero and will remain closely involved in the engineering, design, marketing, education and support for Specdrums rings.
