Creative practice is fueled by chance and accidental discoveries. Furthermore, history shows us several techniques artists have employed to explicitly engage chance within their artwork. We are exploring how these intentional engagements with chance could be implemented in digital fabrication systems. These questions have led to the production of a portable system for 3D printing in nature as well as a portable weaving loom whose pattern is determined by the local wind speeds and data about solar wind-speeds. With these projects, we aim to broaden perceptions of creativity beyond the human, framing digital fabrication as a technique capable of harnessing a broader set of creative forces.
