When you complete an associate's degree at a Colorado community college

If you complete an Associate of Arts (AA)Ìýor an Associate of Sciences (AS)Ìýdegree at a Colorado community college*, this degree fulfills all of the Gen Ed requirements in the College of Arts and Sciences. ÌýAll Associate Degrees with Designation (DwDs), as well as the general AA and AS degrees, earn this Gen Ed waiver, but AssociateÌýof Applied Science (AAS), Associate of Enginering Science (AES),Ìýand Associate of General Studies (AGS)Ìýdegrees DO NOT earn the Gen Ed waiver**.

What about gtPathways courses?

If you transfer to CU Boulder from a Colorado community college* before earning an AA or AS or after earning an AAS, AES, or AGS degree, the gtPathways courses you took at your community college are guaranteed to count toward your A&S Gen Ed requirements. They will be applied to your Gen Ed requirements on a course-by-course basis, which is determined by their GT designation.

**Â鶹ÒùÔº who matriculated at CU Boulder in Spring 2023 or any early term who earned the Gen. Ed. waiver are still subject to the college'sÌýMinimum Academic Preparation Standards (MAPS) Admissions requirements.Ìý This means that even though they are waived from Gen Ed, if a student did not complete the following course work while in high school or make it up at their community college,Ìýthey will be required to take additional lower-division courses at CU to rectify that deficiency.ÌýÌý

Pre-Summer 2023ÌýMAPS (Minimum Academic Preparation Standards) RequirementsÌý

  • 3 years of English
  • 4 years of Mathematics
  • 3 years of Natural Science, including 1 year of Chemistry or Physics
  • 3 years of Social Science, including 1 year of U.S. or World History and 1 year of Geography
  • 3 years of the same Foreign Language

Student who matriculate in Summer 2023 or subsequent terms are not longer required to rectify any MAPS deficinces that they might have by taking courses at CUÌýBoulder.

***Â鶹ÒùÔº who transfer to CU Boulder with credit for just a GT-CO1 course or just a GT-CO2 course, but not both, will complete theÌýWritten CommunicationÌýcategory of the Gen Ed SkillsÌýrequirement at CU Boulder by passing an approved Upper-division Written Communication course.
