This past week, Associate Professor Eric Vance was informed that his collaborative paper, , was selected as the Journal of Statistics Education’s best paper published in 2019. Dr. Vance collaborated with Heather Smith of Cal Poly, who is a lecturer in their Department of Statistics.
The Journal of Statistics Education is an official journal of the American Statistical Association whose goal is to disseminate “knowledge for the improvement of statistics education at all levels, including elementary, secondary, post-secondary, post-graduate, continuing, and workplace education” (dz貹).
Interdisciplinatry communication skills are critical to have for any data scientist or applied statistician, which is why Dr. Vance and Heather Smith collaboratively "developed a framework covering five essential components of statistical collaboration: Attitude, Structure, Content, Communication, and Relationship," which is called the ASCCR Frame. This paper shows "how this framework can be applied specifically to statisticians and data scientists to improve their collaboration skills and their interdisciplinary impact ... the ASCCR Frame can help organize and stimulate research and teaching in interdisciplinary collaboration and call on individuals and organizations to begin generating evidence regarding its effectiveness" (Vance & Smith, 2019).
The full statement from the JSE selection committee reads:
