Active Optical Devices Specialization

In this online engineering specialization, you will deepen and apply your knowledge of optical devices to design electronics that adapt to different optical environments. You will complete courses in light-emitting diodes and semiconductor lasers, nanophotonics and detectors, and displays.

By completing this specialization, you will learn to:

  • Analyze and design light sources and surrounding optical systems
  • Analyze and design detection systems for LIDAR, microscopy, and cameras
  • Design optical device systems that can adapt to the environment
  • Use lasers and optical electronics through an understanding of the interaction of light and atoms, laser rate equations, and noise in photo-detection

Courses

  • Light Emitting Diodes & Semiconductor Lasers
  • Nanophotonics & Detectors
  • Displays

This specialization can be taken for academic credit as part of CU Boulder’s Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (MS-EE) degree offered on the Coursera platform. The MS-EE is an affordable, global master's program powered by you. Learn more about the MS-EE program.
