Project Description

Â鶹ÒùÔº joining this project will learn about modern wind turbines and the controllers needed to yield high performance.Ìý Advanced control algorithms play a key role in maximizing the power production of modern wind turbines. Thereby, several hard constraints like a maximum rotor speed or blade loads must not be exceeded. To ensure that, the development of novel control algorithms for wind turbines involves a careful validation under extreme wind conditions. This can be achieved, for example, by comprehensive high-fidelity simulations or extensive wind tunnel tests. The task of the student is to support our research group in evaluating and testing advanced control algorithms for wind turbines. Depending on the interest of the student, the tasks can be more hardware- or software-oriented. On the hardware side, possible tasks are implementation of control algorithms on real-time hardware, or post-processing measured data from wind tunnel experiments (if available by then). On the software side, the focus is to evaluate and optimize the controller performance using high-fidelity simulations.Ìý

Special Requirements

ECEN 3300, MCEN 3030, CVEN 3111, CSCI 3656, APPM 3310, or equivalents. Experience with software tools like Matlab or LabView is highly advantageous. Any control systems experience would be a plus.
